Ibtihaj Muhammad grew up in a family where sports played a central role. As a child, she was actively engaged in various sports, although she faced challenges due to her modest attire preferences as a Muslim girl. Her mother often had to alter uniforms to accommodate Ibtihaj's needs. It was at the age of twelve that her journey into fencing began after watching a competition where athletes wore long jackets and pants. Intrigued, she expressed interest in trying fencing in high school, seeing it as a comfortable sport that wouldn’t conflict with her beliefs.
