Despite his departure from strict adherence to Mormonism, Benson acknowledges that elements of his upbringing have persisted in his daily life. One notable example is his limited experience with coffee, which is prohibited in the LDS Church. He humorously remarked that when he did try it, “it tastes like burnt wood.”
