Inside Camp Century, approximately 200 soldiers and military personnel lived in prefabricated, insulated structures designed to withstand the Arctic conditions. Despite the frigid temperatures outside, Camp Century was equipped with essential amenities, including a nuclear reactor for heat and light. The dimly lit isolation and the men’s camaraderie provided a unique albeit tough living experience characterized by a strict regimen of military duties, some thrilling moments of camaraderie, and numerous psychological studies to assess the adaptability of personnel living in such extreme conditions.
