By 1962, amid burgeoning international crises like the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S. began reevaluating its military undertakings in Greenland. Project Iceworm, a plan for developing an extensive missile launch system beneath Greenland’s ice, was ultimately deemed impractical due to shifting realities in the Cold War landscape.
After only six years of operation, Camp Century was abandoned in 1966, buried in the snows of time, along with the lingering radioactive and toxic waste left behind.
