Kakapos are not your typical parrots. They have unique features that set them apart from their avian relatives, such as their forward-facing eyes, enabling enhanced night vision akin to that of owls. Additionally, their vibrant green feathers and strikingly intelligent expressions reflect their evolutionary adaptations to survive in New Zealand’s unique ecosystem.
With a lengthy lifespan potentially reaching up to a century, Kakapos have the potential to serve as living testaments to their evolutionary history. Yet, the odds are stacked against them.
