As 1942 turned into 1943, Nazi Germany had extended its control over much of Europe and the Mediterranean. However, the Allied forces, consisting of British, American, and Canadian troops, began regaining ground with the successful landings in North Africa on November 8, 1942. As the Allies plotted their next move in the Mediterranean, they faced a formidable challenge: the German military was well-prepared for an anticipated assault in southern Europe.
