Survival is a constant challenge on the island, exacerbated by the anticipated environmental consequences. Farming practices, such as slash-and-burn agriculture, pose a significant threat to the forest habitats. In the Kirindy region, deforestation for charcoal production is rampant, diminishing habitats for the fossa and other species. The drastic reduction in suitable space has led to stark declines in the populations of native wildlife, including the elusive fossa.
