Katsonopoulou's research turned toward land as they sought signs of a lagoon that once existed in the vicinity. Surface surveys and excavations revealed artifacts from various periods, including pottery matching the Classical era. In 2001, they uncovered structures dating to the 4th century BCE, coinciding with the time of Helike’s destruction.
Among the discoveries was evidence of a once-thriving city community, preserved over centuries, aligning with records depicting Helike’s historic significance. The conclusion that Helike was submerged in an ancient lagoon solidified, further proving its historical place in the annals of physical geography and mythology.
