Evidence of structural collapse and widespread burning pointed towards a sudden catastrophe. The findings supported the theory that a series of earthquakes reshaped entire regions of the Eastern Mediterranean around the time of the Bronze Age collapse. Yet, the question remained: if an earthquake destroyed Ugarit, why did the inhabitants flee without their possessions?
