One of the most impressive features of Petra is its advanced hydraulic engineering. The Nabataeans faced considerable challenges regarding water supply in the arid desert environment. They built an extensive system of dams and water tanks to manage the scarce and seasonal rainfall, collecting every drop and channeling it into the city. Remarkably, a network of pipes and aqueducts, totaling 29 kilometers, provided an incredible 46 million liters of water daily, catering to a population that peaked at around 30,000 people.
