The Gannet Comeback
Birdlife on Helgoland has also witnessed a revival with the re-establishment of northern gannets during the last two decades. From a single breeding pair in 1991, the population has surged to approximately 400 pairs today. Gannets demonstrate fascinating parenting behaviors, traversing hundreds of miles to feed their growing chicks, who wait patiently for their meals in nests precariously balanced on the cliffs.

Venturing inland, the mountains of southern Germany, particularly the Bavarian Alps and Saxony Switzerland, reveal another aspect of the country’s flora and fauna. Here, the rugged terrain offers a habitat for wildlife including marmots, deer, and the elusive lynx, reintroduced after a long absence.
