One of the most notable events that contributed to the mythos of werewolves occurred in France during the summer of 1764. The region around Gévaudan was rocked by a series of horrific murders, beginning with the tragic death of a young girl, Jeanne Boulet. The locals soon came to believe they were under threat from a terrifying creature—aptly dubbed the "Beast of Gévaudan"—that targeted women and children, and its reign of terror prompted widespread panic and intrigue.
