Claude's fascination with Rafa's mother moves beyond intrigue; he starts to devise methods to spend time with her, using Rafa’s academic vulnerabilities to gain access to their household. While Germaine fails to see the moral decline in Claude’s character, his wife, Jean, is disturbed by the nature of Claude's thoughts, urging Germaine to take action against what she senses is an unhealthy obsession.
