As she waters a dry patch of grass and takes a moment to prepare a dress for shipment, the indifference of her neighbors becomes apparent when they avoid her greetings entirely. Her visit to her mother's grave is a reminder of her isolation; she hurries away at the sound of approaching footsteps, desperate to avoid interaction.
