Taking on the role of Captain America is no small feat, especially for Mackey, who has long understood the historical and cultural significance of the character. His connection to the role intensified during the filming of the series that preceded the movie; it was during that time that he truly grasped the impact the character has on countless fans.
Mackey expressed that when he first learned he would portray Captain America, it brought tears to his eyes. "I think it did when it first happened... the idea of taking on this mantle means so much to so many people," he said.
