The story opens in 1998, where Ludo faces the heartbreaking news of Melanie's sudden death during a beach walk. As the years pass, Ludo becomes a detective, working through his grief while raising their daughter, Juliet, with his new wife, Rachel. However, fate brings Ludo back to the very same beach where tragedy struck, only this time he is investigating the murder of a young woman who met her end at the same spot where Melanie died.
