Jedediah’s arrival in Pittsburgh serves as a sobering reminder of the racial divides still entrenched in society. He learns that even in the North, the Fugitive Slave Act imposes a severe threat to runaway slaves. Yet, the bunkhouse of the Reverend Stewart offers a glimmer of hope. It is here that Jedediah begins to integrate into a world still rife with prejudices but where compassion occasionally transcends the barriers of race.
