Born in South Africa and raised in Canada and the U.S., Musk first married Canadian author Justine Wilson in 2000. Together, they faced immeasurable sorrow with the loss of their first child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), a tragedy that would haunt their marriage. Following this event, the couple had five more children, all boys, whose names are notably inspired by a science fiction series.
Musk's marriage to Wilson ended in divorce in 2008, a process that she later described as tumultuous in a revealing 2010 essay published in Marie Claire. In her candid writing, she noted Musk's assertion that he was the "alpha" in their relationship, a declaration that became a focal point in their eventual separation. Post-divorce, the couple maintained shared custody of their children.
