As the story begins, we find Brett in disarray, both mentally and physically. His home, reflecting his inner turmoil, is cluttered and messy. Friends express concern for his mental state as they attempt to encourage him to move forward. One friend bluntly suggests he should consider “letting go” of Jillian, who has been gone for nearly a year. Although well-meaning, this advice sends Brett into a spiral as he battles the realization that he cannot write without her presence guiding him.
