As NASA outlined, when astronauts are stationed aboard the ISS, they receive regular salaries without extra benefits or pay for overtime or holiday weekends. Despite their extraordinary work environment, astronauts remain federal employees and, thus, subject to the same payroll structures as other government workers. This means that their transportation, lodging, and meals while in space are all covered under the auspices of official travel orders, placing them in a long-term Temporary Duty (TDY) status for their duration in orbit.
