Crucially, the governance structure of a SAF is different from traditional sports associations. In the latter, members have the ability to vote out leaders or influence club decisions, but in a SAF, the owners hold the reins. They can make decisions without direct feedback or accountability to the fans, aside from the usual market pressures. Therefore, while the SAF model may offer some advantages, it also presents potential risks of disconnect between management and the fan base.
