Part 2/6:
It is widely acknowledged among historians that Coração Valente significantly diverges from historical fact. This film, while dramatizing Wallace’s life story, takes creative liberties that render it nearly a medieval fan fiction with a hefty budget. The narrative begins with young William Wallace experiencing the tragic loss of his father and brother to English forces. During this emotional moment, a young girl presents him with a thistle, a flower that symbolizes Scotland. The prophecy in her actions foreshadows the challenges and pain Wallace will face. It’s worth noting, however, that the scene draws attention not just for its symbolism but also for anachronistic details, such as Wallace’s adult portrayal contradicting his childhood left-handedness.
