Tolkien was a master of symbolism, and Isaac elaborates on how the color white traditionally represents peace and purity. Saruman, as a White Wizard, was initially tasked by the Valar with leading the order of wizards to promote good. His white robes symbolized his noble intentions and wisdom. However, as Saruman’s lust for power grew, he began to stray from these ideals. The shift to “many colors” epitomizes his moral decline and his betrayal of the very mission he was given.
