Initially, Peter Jackson had planned to feature a confrontation between Aragorn and Sauron, portraying Sauron as a physical adversary rather than just the menacing Eye of Sauron that lingers at the top of Barad-dûr. Jackson's decision to create this scene stemmed from his recognition that Sauron did have a corporeal form during the events of "The Lord of the Rings," as stated in J.R.R. Tolkien's works.

However, as production progressed, Jackson decided to replace Sauron with a computer-generated troll in the final cut of the film. This change prompts the question: why would a director choose to remove a scene already recorded? One common assumption is that Jackson wanted to remain faithful to Tolkien's original narrative, which does not contain such a duel.
