However, this strategic gamble backfired spectacularly. Shortly after his release, Gollum was recaptured by Aragorn, a figure Sauron regarded as one of his greatest enemies. Gollum’s swift transition from prisoner to fugitive only deepened Sauron's despair as he recognized that his decision had wrought unforeseen consequences. Meanwhile, Sauron faced insurmountable challenges due to Saruman's treachery and the vigilance of the Dunedain. This led Sauron to regret allowing Gollum to escape, recognizing too late that he had given freedom to what might become one of the most unpredictable elements in his quest for dominance.
