One of the most striking deviations between the comics and the television adaptation is the brutal fate of Rick Grimes at the hands of the Governor. In the comics, Rick loses his right hand during a confrontation, a symbol of the brutal world he inhabits. Creator Robert Kirkman later expressed regret over this decision, feeling it hindered Rick's capabilities. Contrary to this, in the series, Rick remains intact, and the Governor's actions are more calculated, using psychological manipulation instead of outright physical mutilation to instill fear.
