The Darkening of Moria: The Beginnings of Despair
Despite its might, the decline of Khazad-dûm began with the awakening of the Balrog—an ancient demon stirred from its slumber by the Dwarves’ persistent mining for mithril. This catastrophic event catalyzed the kingdom's demise, leading to the tragic loss of its inhabitants. The once thriving halls fell silent, with only the Balrog remaining as the dwelling's dark sentinel.
Following this, Moria's ominous reputation grew; it became known as “Moria,” meaning “the Dark Abyss.” For centuries, it lay in ruins, largely untouched, while the Dwarves sought refuge elsewhere.
