Ironically, while Sauron recognized Gandalf as a potential threat, he consistently mistook his motivations for power. Sauron was convinced that Gandalf sought to seize an One Ring for himself or for someone he could control, reflecting Sauron's own narcissistic view of the world — every action and intent centered around himself. Even as he confronted Gandalf's potential, Sauron remained blind to the truth of Gandalf's role as a unifying force against evil.
