An examination of satellite data spanning from 1985 shows a significant rise in the rate of ocean warming—from 0.06 degrees Celsius per decade in the 1980s to 0.27 degrees Celsius per decade today. Alarmingly, this increase is not uniform but is accelerating. Notably, while some of this excess heat can be attributed to the El Niño phenomenon, approximately 44% results from oceans absorbing heat much faster than previously predicted.
