Following Pierre's untimely death in 1906, Marie became the first female professor at the Sorbonne and continued to make remarkable contributions to science. In 1911, despite facing rejection from the French Academy of Sciences, she received a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for her discoveries related to polonium and radium.
