These tankers often operate outside the purview of law enforcement, circumventing regulations and putting maritime safety at risk. These ships frequently operate without insurance and intentionally disable their AIS (Automatic Identification System) transponders, rendering them nearly invisible. As a result, defining the scale of this operation and the associated risks becomes increasingly complex.
