Part 5/7:

According to a report from Australia’s Online Safety Regulator, many children in Australia are managing to bypass the minimum age limits set by social media platforms. The report revealed that around 80% of Australian children aged between 8 and 12 were using social media in 2024, with popular sites including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

While some platforms, like YouTube, allow users under 13 to maintain accounts with parental supervision, it was found that almost none of the accounts held by children aged 8 to 12 had been shut down for being underage. In response to these concerns, Australia approved a ban on social media use for children under 16, which is set to come into effect at the end of 2025.
