Beginning in May, under new guidelines from the Japanese Justice Ministry, Taiwanese citizens marrying Japanese nationals will have the option to indicate Taiwan as their place of origin instead of the designation of "China." This change addresses the long-standing label that has defined Taiwanese people in Japan's registry system, which has referred to them as residents from China since diplomatic normalization between Japan and Beijing in 1972.
