New reports indicate alarming statistics regarding improper payments made by federal agencies. For example, the Social Security Administration disclosed that it made almost $72 billion in improper payments from 2015 to 2022, predominantly due to overpayments. By the end of 2023, it was estimated that $23 billion still lingered as outstanding overpayments.
