Part 2/5:
Historically, when a Japanese citizen marries someone from overseas, the spouse's nationality and name are recorded in a government-maintained registry system. Under current regulations, individuals from Taiwan have been labeled as coming from China. However, following new guidelines from the Japanese Justice Ministry set to take effect in May, the name of a region can now be recorded in the nationality field. This new policy comes in response to requests from Taiwanese spouses who seek to affirm their regional identity in Japan.
