In the fallout of the controversy, Congress leveraged the finance ministry's annual report for the financial year 2023-24 to counter the accusations. The report highlighted a total commitment of $750 million across seven partnership projects between USAID and the Indian government, of which only $97 million was reported to have been transferred to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in various sectors in India.
This prompted Congress leaders, spearheaded by Jairam Ramesh, to query why the BJP focused on the smaller $21 million figure while significant contributions to NGOs were glossed over. They expressed confusion and concern over the BJP's stance, suggesting a lack of transparency regarding the funding's usage and emphasizing the need for accountability.
