Weighing up to 1,500 pounds with imposing three-foot-wide horns, the cape buffalo presents a significant challenge to lions. Hunting these massive creatures is not only physically demanding, but perilous, as buffalo are known to injure more lions than any other prey species.
To tackle this challenge, lion prides rely on a well-honed strategy, akin to the precision of a professional football team. Each lion takes on a specific role, and they repeat these roles consistently during hunts. The pride’s dynamics are beautifully orchestrated: lions positioned on the flanks move to close in on a lone buffalo, while some act as distractions to keep the buffalo engaged, tiring it out gradually.
