In the hours following Bobby Kennedy’s assassination on June 5, 1968, the atmosphere at Good Samaritan Hospital was fraught with tension. Los Angeles Police Detective Sergeant Dan Stewart was ordered to oversee security, which quickly grew complicated when tensions flared between police and members of the Kennedy camp. The Kennedy aides displayed hostility towards the police presence, believing they were overly pushy during a time of crisis. The situation escalated to the point where a police officer physically overwhelmed one of the aides during a heated exchange.
