When a car's windshield wipers are set to automatic, they activate whenever the windshield detects water. You might think this requires sophisticated technology or advanced cameras, but the reality is much simpler. The key lies in a small device called the rain sensor, located on the windshield, just above the rearview mirror.
The Components Behind the Magic
The rain sensor comprises a pair of essential components: infrared LEDs, which shine light upwards into the glass, and photodiodes, which are tasked with detecting that light. These components are positioned cleverly under a dark filter, which blocks visible light, making them less conspicuous and enhancing their effectiveness.
