This closed captioning is transmitted within the analog video stream, utilizing something known as Line 21. By extracting the closed captioning data, the TV Guardian compares it against a pre-programmed dictionary of offensive terms. If it finds a match, it promptly mutes the audio in order to “protect the innocent,” allowing children to watch films without hearing adult language.
