1. Paper Towel Alternatives
One of the simplest yet most effective swaps is to eliminate paper towels and napkins. In the United States alone, approximately 13 billion pounds of paper towels are used each year. The production of these items not only contributes to deforestation but also requires vast amounts of water and energy.
Instead of opting for this single-use option, consider using Swedish dishcloths, cotton flannel cloths, and old textiles such as ripped t-shirts. Swedish dishcloths, a blend of cellulose and cotton, are highly absorbent and last a long time with proper care. Meanwhile, cotton towels become more absorbent after a few washes, making them a reliable tool in any sustainable kitchen.
