Surprisingly, our own ears can produce sound through a phenomenon known as otoacoustic emissions. In many individuals, particularly those with normal hearing, the ear generates soft tones that can occasionally be detected externally. This elusive quality of hearing can sometimes relate to tinnitus, a condition where individuals experience a ringing sensation. Understanding otoacoustic emissions furthers our knowledge of auditory perception, revealing that our hearing apparatus is far more complex than it might appear.
