Ferguson rejects the notion that the Chinese Communist Party is merely a group of cynical capitalists, arguing that Xi Jinping and other leaders are true believers in Marxism-Leninism. This ideology of conflict, he says, underpins China's determination to displace the United States as the dominant global power.
At the same time, the Chinese model of authoritarian capitalism has gained some appeal in the developing world, offering a path to economic development and social control that contrasts with the perceived dysfunction of Western democracies. Ferguson cautions that while this model may not be as seductive as Soviet communism was, it still poses a threat to American interests and values.
