Part 1/4:
Exploring the Unique Flavors of American Fast Food in China
McDonald's: An Alternative Universe
As I stepped into the McDonald's in Chengdu, China, I was immediately struck by the array of unique menu items that have been tailored to local tastes. Gone were the familiar Big Macs and Chicken McNuggets - instead, I found an alternative universe where McDonald's had taken a different path.
The kiosk menu boasted items I had never seen before, like the massive "Flying Saucer Chicken Burger" and the "Sausage and Beef Burger Combo." The fries, while still crispy, had a distinct seasoning that set them apart from their American counterparts. And the Taro McFlurry, a dessert made with chunks of the starchy purple potato, was a surprising twist on the classic ice cream treat.
