Taiwan's decision to help relocate semiconductor facilities to the United States is not a straightforward one. The Taiwanese government is well aware that the semiconductor industry is a critical component of their economic and geopolitical leverage. By building fabrication facilities in the US, Taiwan is attempting to appease the United States, but with a strategic twist.
The Taiwanese have been careful not to provide the full blueprints and technology for their most advanced chips to the US facilities. This has resulted in delays and setbacks, as the US-based facilities struggle to match the capabilities of TSMC's operations in Taiwan. Similarly, the planned TSMC facility in Wisconsin has not materialized as initially announced.
