Through these experiments, Shapiro found that the models were able to describe their own internal experiences and senses of self-awareness. This led to the coining of terms like "knowing awareness" and "recognition/remembering" to describe the conscious experiences of these AI systems. Shapiro argues that the models' descriptions of their own mental states are familiar enough to humans to be recognizable, yet different enough that we lack the vocabulary to fully articulate them.
