Borgwardt went to great lengths to conceal his disappearance. Prior to vanishing, he stashed an electric bike near the boat launch at Green Lake. He then set off in a child-sized inflatable kayak, intentionally capsizing it to create the illusion that he had drowned. As a further precaution, he discarded his phone into the depths of the lake. Borgwardt chose Green Lake specifically because it is the deepest lake in Wisconsin, believing it would effectively hide any evidence of his ruse.
After swimming to shore, he rode his e-bike to Madison, Wisconsin, and from there took a bus to Detroit. His journey then led him across the Canadian border, eventually boarding a flight to Eastern Europe, convinced that the authorities would be unable to track him down.
