Despite Don Johnson's now-iconic association with the character Sonny Crockett, NBC initially resisted casting him. Johnson, known as "pilot poison" for his role in several unsuccessful TV pilots, faced stiff competition from well-known actors like Nick Nolte and Jeff Bridges, both of whom opted to focus on their film careers. Larry Wilcox, famed for his role in CHiPs, was a close contender, but Johnson ultimately won the role.
