The A's began their existence in Kansas City after relocating from Philadelphia in 1955. Early on, they struggled under the ownership of Charles Finley, an insurance magnate who bought the team in the 1960s. Finley invested heavily in improving the Municipal Stadium but faced significant challenges. He was unhappy with the existing lease, which required sharing the facility with other sports teams, and sought to create a distinct identity for the A's that represented Kansas City.
