Yet amidst the chaos, a glimmer of hope emerged when the underdog Sox unexpectedly won game three, leaving fans and gamblers bewildered.
The shameful act of throwing the series reached its climax in game eight, where the White Sox were defeated decisively. As the Cincinnati Reds celebrated their victory, the players' short-lived windfall soon turned into a cage of guilt and paranoia.
